Editor, Arena Online
Founded in 2024, Arena Magazine (arenamag.com) is a high quality print magazine based in Austin, TX. Our mission is to tell the Great American Story of entrepreneurship, enterprise, and technology. We are launching a digital magazine business in the summer of 2025. Read our content here.
We’re a small but mighty team of ~6 moving fast to scale the content and the business.
About the Role
Arena Magazine is seeking an ambitious editor and manager to help jumpstart our digital business. You will be managing the day to day for our online content and will help set the editorial vision for the company through your writing.
As the Managing Editor & General Manager of Online, you will be responsible for managing the entire cycle for online content. This includes: finding contributors, developing a pipeline of contributors, working with them to create content for Arena Online, editing their work, managing the relationship with them, and ensuring that all content online fits the mold of an Arena story.
You will work also work closely with the team on story selection and ideation, proactively creating original story ideas.
You will also have the opportunity to write.
Requirements
You must be comfortable helping edit columnists and guests pieces, and perform a variety of tasks that are outside the scope of the job description (this is a startup!).
You must have the ability to recruit and inspire people to write for Arena. This includes building a network along the way.
You are a strong writer and must be able to write clear prose.
You must be willing to engage with the audience in good faith.
You must be able to consistently hit deadlines.
You must be willing to work independently and with the growth team to maximize reach and influence.
You must be comfortable with ambiguity, the scope of this role is subject to change to meet the needs of the business as we grow.
You must be willing to work on newsletters and email products if and when needed.
You are a believer that more information and transparency is better. You do not believe in the traditional, gatekeeping and agenda setting mentality of the legacy press. You know that information, regardless of source, should be judged on its merits alone.
Ideally, you have experience writing. This can include working at a traditional outlet, writing in business or investing, posting on X, or any other type of writing that has allowed you to highlight your ability to distill complex ideas into simple ones, and tell a compelling story.
This role requires an independent thinker who believes in the Arena mission of telling The Great American Story. You must be able to go deep on a wide variety of topics quickly, while also being humble enough to fill in your gaps of knowledge. Arena is not in the Gell-Mann Amnesia business.
This role will require working hard and with availability at most times during the day.
We have a strong preference for Austin, TX based or willingness to move to Austin.
You!
Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience writing, as defined above

Self-Starter: Don’t need to be asked to do start, write, and finish stories and assignments
